Solar + battery · Tesla Powerwall

Find the right solar + battery solution for your home

Short answer

The right solar + battery setup is the one sized for what you want to keep running when the power goes out. Solar panels generate energy, Tesla Powerwall stores it, and together they keep your chosen circuits on during an outage and recharge from the sun during the day. VOLT designs it around your backup goals, your consumption and your home, whether you already have solar or are starting from scratch.

How solar and Powerwall work together in an outage

Most grid-tied solar panels shut down when the grid fails, to protect the utility crews repairing the lines. A battery with backup controls is what keeps your home running.

  1. When the grid is up

Your panels power your home first. Extra solar energy charges Powerwall, and anything left over goes to the grid under your utility's net metering rules.

  2. The moment the power goes out

Powerwall detects the outage, separates your home from the grid and keeps powering the circuits it is set up to protect. You don't have to do anything.

  3. During a long outage

While your home is off the grid, your panels keep recharging the battery during daylight, so you can get through the night and start again the next morning. How far that stretches depends on the sun and on what you run.

What determines the right setup

There is no standard size. These five things decide how many batteries you need and how the system is set up.

  • Your backup goals

Do you want essentials during a short outage, or most of the home for several days of hurricane season? The answer sets the size of everything else.

  • Critical loads

The fridge, lights, Wi-Fi, a well pump or medical equipment need little power. Central air conditioning is one of the largest loads in a Florida home, so including it usually means more capacity and the right configuration.

  • Your consumption

Your last 12 months of electric bills show how much energy your home really uses, by season. We size from your numbers, not from an average home.

  • Number of batteries

One Powerwall 3 stores 13.5 kWh and delivers up to 11.5 kW of continuous power. More batteries add hours of backup and room for larger loads.

  • Existing solar or new

If you already have panels, we check your inverter, your system and your utility's requirements. If you are starting fresh, solar and storage are designed together from day one.

Two ways to get there

Option 1

Add a battery to your existing solar

In most cases you keep your panels. Before recommending a battery we check your current inverter and panels, your electrical panel, where the battery can be mounted and what your utility requires. Adding storage usually needs a building permit and an update to your interconnection agreement; VOLT coordinates both.

Option 2

New solar + battery system

Panels and batteries are designed as one system from the start. Powerwall 3 includes a built-in solar inverter, so many new systems need no separate inverter. One project, one team, one written proposal for the whole system.

Your electric bills, your electrical panel, your roof and any equipment you already have.

  3. Design and proposal

The number of batteries, the backed-up circuits and the solar size. Your written proposal confirms the equipment, the circuits that stay on and the schedule.

  4. Permits, utility and installation

VOLT handles the permit and the utility steps and installs the system with its own team.

Frequently asked questions

How many Powerwall batteries does my home need?

It depends on what you want to back up and for how long. Essentials such as the fridge, lights and Wi-Fi often fit one Powerwall; whole-home backup with central air conditioning usually needs two or more. Your design confirms the number before installation.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

In most cases, yes. We check your current inverter and panels, your electrical panel and your utility's requirements first. Adding a battery usually needs a building permit and an update to your interconnection agreement, which VOLT coordinates.

Can a battery run my central air conditioning during an outage?

It can, if the system is designed for it. Central air is one of the largest loads in a Florida home, so it usually needs more battery capacity and the right configuration. Your design states in advance whether the AC is on backup.

How long will Powerwall keep my home running?

It depends on how much energy you use and how many batteries you have. With solar, the panels recharge the battery during the day, so a well-sized system can keep essential circuits running through a multi-day outage. Without solar, the battery can only use the energy it stored before the outage.

Do I need solar panels to get a battery?

No. A battery without solar still switches on automatically in an outage, using the energy it stored from the grid. With solar, it can recharge every day while the grid is down, which is what makes long outages manageable.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. The consultation and your proposal are free and come with no obligation. We confirm availability for your property in Florida or California.
